A Neshoba Central softball player has been named Gatorade Player of the Year in Mississippi.
Pitcher Aspen Wesley was recognized not only for outstanding athletic excellence, but also high standards of academic achievement and outstanding character.
Wesley, a sophomore, posted a 25-2 record in the circle and helped lead the Lady Rockets to their fifth straight Class 5A State Championship.
“I won two times in a row. I was like, is that even possible?” said Wesley. “But people make it possible. I was just very excited for it.”
“She’s a player who puts all of her heart into this game and she works extremely hard in the classroom and in the field,” said Coach Trey Embry. “And she deserves everything she is getting.”
As a Gatorade player of the year, Wesley will be able to select a national or local youth sports organization to receive a $1,000 grant as part of the company’s Play It Forward program.
