After a Christmas flu spike in Mississippi, most areas are now seeing fewer cases. The Health Department says the statewide flu rate has dropped slightly, now under 5 per cent. For the week ending Jan. 3, health care providers across Mississippi reported 761 suspected flu cases out of more than 15,000 total patients. Most of the public health districts are reporting fewer cases including Mississippi’s flu hotspot, the district which stretches from Attala County up into the Delta, and also includes Holmes, Carroll and Montgomery counties. The flu rate there has dropped from almost 27 per cent to slightly under 20 per cent. In the district which includes Choctaw and Winston counties, it’s down to 3 and a half per cent and in the district which includes Leake and Neshoba counties, the flu rate is three per cent.
The CDC is now classifying flu activity in Mississippi as “moderate,” down from “high” the week before. Only six states are seeing less flu than we are.
