JACKSON, Miss. — Mississippi Blood Services (MBS) is kicking off 2026 with refreshed donor loyalty programs aimed at recognizing the state’s rare blood donors. The Universal Donor Program and the Power Red Program honor O-Negative and B-Negative donors, whose contributions play a vital role in hospitals across Mississippi.
O-Negative blood, carried by just 7% of the population, is known as the “universal blood type” and is often used in emergencies when a patient’s blood type is unknown. B-Negative blood is even rarer, found in only 2% of the population, and can be given to patients with B-Negative, B-Positive, AB-Negative, and AB-Positive blood. Because of their rarity and versatility, donors with these blood types are critical to maintaining a steady blood supply.
Starting January 1, 2026, donors will receive a loyalty card and a Visa® gift card with their first donation of the year. Continued donations of whole blood or double red cells throughout the year unlock additional rewards, including exclusive loyalty gear, recognizing their lifesaving impact.
The Universal Donor Program is exclusively for O-Negative donors, while the Power Red Program is tailored for B-Negative donors. Both programs encourage repeat donations, strengthen Mississippi’s blood supply, and celebrate the donors who make it possible.
