The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has announced tax relief for Mississippi residents and businesses affected by the severe winter storm that began January 23, 2026.
Affected taxpayers now have until June 8, 2026, to file federal tax returns and make tax payments that were originally due between January 23 and June 8, 2026.
The relief applies to individuals and businesses across Mississippi following a federal disaster declaration issued by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).
Key details include:
- Individual income tax returns and payments normally due during the covered period are now due June 8, 2026.
- Quarterly payroll and certain business tax returns due in February and April are also extended to June 8.
- Penalties for certain payroll and excise tax deposits may be waived if payments were made by February 9, 2026.
The IRS says most eligible taxpayers will automatically receive the extended deadlines. Those who live outside the disaster area but were affected can call the IRS disaster assistance line at 866-562-5227 to request relief.
Additional relief may be available, including options to claim storm-related casualty losses on tax returns.
