(Brian Montgomery) Philadelphia authors Dekota Cheatham and Krissy Long joined B-MO in the Morning to talk about their fifth children’s book, “Watson Goes to the Choctaw Indian Fair,” created in partnership with the Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians.
Cheatham, an educator, and Long, the Director of Education and Community Engagement for Neshoba Now, said the Watson series began with a simple mission: creating books that Mississippi children can see themselves in. That mission has now grown into a series celebrating local places, traditions, and experiences across the state.
The new book highlights Choctaw culture, language, food, artistry, and the annual Choctaw Indian Fair. Long said the authors worked closely with members of the Tribe, including the language department, to make sure the culture was represented accurately and respectfully.
The book will officially launch during the Fourth Annual Poodle Party on Friday, June 13, with a free family event featuring basket weaving, beading, rabbit stick demonstrations, dancing exhibitions, a book reading, and more.
