CARTHAGE, Miss.–Gov. Tate Reeves declared a state of emergency ahead of expected extreme cold and possible accumulations of snow and ice.

The state of emergency extends from Sunday, Jan, 19, through Jan. 22, or until the threat is over.

“State assistance may be necessary to support local governments,” read the proclamation. “Mississippi state agencies will discharge their emergency responsibilities as necessary.”

The Mississippi Dept. of Transportation said Saturday they were preparing to treat highways with salt, to try and prevent any wintry precipitation from sticking to the surfaces.

“While MDOT crews will be working to keep roads passable, sometimes conditions can overwhelm available resources, and cars can be on the highways for long periods. Just in case, it’s a good idea to remain weather-aware and prepare a winter car kit to store in your vehicle,” said MDOT in a Facebook post.

They advise the kit should contain a windshield scraper, bottled water, snacks, flashlight, jumper cables, phone chargers, blankets, warm clothing, first aid kit and flares.
