Leake County Sheriff Randy Atkinson speaks with Johnny Boswell about the facility’s new sawmill and the group of inmates that run it:
The Leake County Correctional Facility has recently introduced a sawmill operated by select inmates.
The mill uses donated wood or timber cleared from fallen trees across the county. A carpentry club with about 10 inmates from the Mississippi Department of Corrections (MDOC) teaches participants woodworking skills.
The sawmill was purchased at a discount from T&K Farms Wood-Mizer and provides inmates with hands-on experience and a constructive activity during their time at the facility.
