Busy Tuesday for Leake County First Responders; Fire and Many Crashes

Leake County emergency responders were kept busy on Tuesday, Feb. 11, with multiple incidents across the area.

Deputies first responded to a report of a cow in the roadway on Galilee Rd. near Hwy 488.

At 1:30 p.m., Leake County Deputies, EMS, and the Marydell Volunteer Fire Department were dispatched to a one-vehicle crash on Mars Hill Rd. The driver was reportedly trapped in the vehicle but was later freed and transported to UMMC.

At 3:30 p.m., Leake Deputies and MHP responded to a hit-and-run on Hwy 35 S near Hwy 487. Carthage Police were notified to be on the lookout for the fleeing vehicle.

Just before 4 p.m., another crash occurred on Hwy 25 near Hwy 16, where a vehicle ran off the road into a wooded area. One person was taken to Baptist-Leake for treatment.

Later, multiple fire departments, including Carthage Fire Department, Leake Correction firefighters, and several volunteer fire departments, responded to a house fire on Reservation Rd. The home was fully engulfed when firefighters arrived. No injuries were reported, and the cause is currently unknown.

At 10:45 p.m., Carthage Police were called to a disturbance on Dickens St. An ambulance was dispatched to treat someone for a head injury.
