City of Kosciusko warns residents of contractor scam targeting homeowners

The City of Kosciusko is warning residents to be on alert after multiple reports of a contractor-related scam that has impacted homeowners across the community.

According to city officials, several residents have reported encounters with individuals offering yard work and landscaping services at extremely low prices. After the work is completed, the contractors allegedly present homeowners with bills that are significantly higher than the original agreement — in some cases reaching hundreds or even thousands of dollars more.

City leaders say the contractors often approach homeowners directly, promising fast and affordable service. Once the work is finished, however, the price dramatically increases, leaving residents feeling pressured to pay the unexpected amount.

To help prevent residents from becoming victims, the City of Kosciusko is urging homeowners to take several precautions, including obtaining a firm, written estimate before any work begins. Officials also recommend making sure the estimate clearly outlines the scope of work and total price, avoiding verbal agreements, and never paying the full amount upfront.

Residents are also encouraged to ask contractors for proper business identification, including a valid City of Kosciusko business license, and to take time to verify references or reviews when possible. City officials say contractors who refuse to provide written estimates or pressure homeowners to agree immediately should be considered a red flag.

The city particularly urges residents to share this information with elderly neighbors, friends, and family members, who are often targeted in these types of scams.
