Local football fans will have a little extra reason to tune in tonight when the College Football Playoff National Championship kicks off between Miami and Indiana.
Starting at left tackle for the Hurricanes is Markel Bell, a familiar name to those in central Mississippi after he played his community college ball at Holmes CC. Bell spent two seasons at Holmes before moving on to Miami, where he’s quickly become a key piece of one of the best offenses in the country.
At Miami, Bell has played in 27 games, starting in 20 of them. In his time, he has helped Miami become one of the top offense’s in the country.
Before transferring, Bell was one of the top junior college prospects in the country, earning All-Region honors at Holmes and drawing offers from several SEC programs.
Now, he’s set to protect the blind side on college football’s biggest stage, giving local fans a hometown connection as Miami plays for a national title tonight.
The College Football Playoff National Championship game kicks off at 6:30 and will be televised on ESPN.
