No Power, No Internet? Radio may be your best source for updates during winter storm

Severe winter weather can do more than make travel difficult — it can also knock out power, internet access, and even mobile phone service. When that happens, staying informed becomes a challenge, especially in a world where most people rely on digital alerts and social media for updates.

One of the most reliable ways to stay informed during widespread outages is with a portable or battery-powered FM radio. Radios do not rely on Wi-Fi or cell towers and can continue providing weather alerts and emergency information even when other systems are unavailable.

Residents are encouraged to check now to see if they have a working radio and extra batteries on hand. NOAA weather radios are also recommended, especially for extended outages, as they are designed to deliver alerts directly from the National Weather Service.

In addition to having a radio, people should plan ahead by writing down important phone numbers, downloading critical information in advance, and deciding how their household will receive updates if digital services go down.

When power, internet, and cell service fail, radio remains one of the most dependable ways for central Mississippi residents to stay informed until conditions improve.
