While on routine patrol, an officer spotted smoke at Belhaven Apartments on S Valley St. Monday afternoon. The officer went to investigate, fearing he would find a residence in flames.

Instead, he discovered someone burning a couch. Apparently, the owner of the couch discovered that roaches had taken up residence and decided on an impromptu eviction via fire.

Carthage firefighters also responded to the blazing couch at the apartment complex. No one was injured, except maybe the roaches.
