Update: Doyle Edward Ferguson has been found and is safe.
The following is a statement posted on Facebook by Leake County Sheriff Randy Atkinson:
On Friday, September 20, 2024, at approximately 1630, the Leake County Sheriff’s Office was dispatched to 127 Ott Jones Road regarding a missing man in the wooded area near his home.
Upon arrival, deputies were notified that his wife, Mrs. Shirley Ferguson, had made her way out of the woods. She stated that they went into the woods Thursday around noon and spent the night there after getting lost. She stated she left her husband, Mr. Doyle Ferguson, by a tree to get him water and help. However, She could not make her way back to him. Deputies on the scene notified the Sheriff.
The Sheriff called for drones within our agencies and Winston County Sheriff’s Office, volunteer fire departments throughout Leake County, Mississippi Department of Wildlife Fisheries and Parks, and Leake County emergency management personnel Tommy Malone and Rhonda Blanton to aid in this search.
Mr. Ferguson was found in the early afternoon of Saturday, September 21, 2024, and transported to the Leake Baptist Emergency Department for medical treatment.
Finding this man with only minor medical needs is truly a miracle, and to God be the glory. Sheriff Randy W. Atkinson and the Leake County Sheriff’s Office would like to thank all those who sent aid and assisted in the search effort, including Leake Emergency Management, Leake 9-1-1 Communications, Leake County Volunteer Fire Departments, Mississippi Department of Wildlife Fisheries and Parks, Winston County Sheriff’s Office, and family members of Mr. Ferguson.

The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation has issued a Silver Alert for a missing Walnut Grove man. Doyle Edward Ferguson, 80, was last seen Friday around 3 pm in the 100 block of Ott Jones Road in Leake County, walking north. He was last seen wearing a maroon checkered shirt and blue jeans.
