Election Day is just over a month away now. And Mississippi’s top election official is confident that anyone trying to hack into the state’s voting system will be unsuccessful…
“As far as I am concerned, Mississippi is going to be one of the, if not the safest, state come Nov. 5 for the election…”
And Secretary of State Michael Watson is hoping to prevent a repeat of what happened on Election Day two years ago, when his website was hit by a cyberattack….
“We now have more tools in place to make sure it doesn’t happen again…”
Watson says the attack in 2022 has helped to make his website a tougher target…
“By seeing that, by going through that experience, it helps us to be even better this coming Election Day,” Watson says.
Federal prosecutors and the FBI in Mississippi are teaming up to guard against any violations of election laws. This includes destruction of ballots, vote-buying, voting more than once, submission of fraudulent ballots or registrations and alteration of votes as well as any threats against election workers. Each U-S Attorney’s office will have a designated election officer to oversee reports of violations and the Jackson FBI office will have an election crime coordinator who’ll be on duty while the polls are open to receive complaints from the public at 1-800-CALL-FBI.
