Students attending the Leake County School District will be required to use clear plastic or mesh backpacks beginning with the 2026-2027 school year under a new district policy aimed at enhancing campus safety.

The district announced the requirement in a Facebook post, stating that all students in Pre-K through 12th grade must use a clear plastic or mesh backpack in accordance with Board Policy JCDBB: School Bookbags.

According to the district, the policy is intended to help maintain a safe and secure learning environment for students and staff.

Under the policy, all school bags—including backpacks, bookbags, satchels and similar items—must be constructed of clear plastic or mesh material so that the contents are clearly visible. The district says only bags meeting those standards will be permitted inside school buildings and on school grounds.

In its announcement, the district encouraged parents and guardians to review the policy and begin preparing for the upcoming school year by purchasing approved backpacks before classes begin.

“The safety of our students and staff is our top priority,” the district said in its announcement.
