SEBASTOPOL, Miss.–About 100 acres burned in a fire Saturday afternoon in Sebastopol, said the Sebastopol Fire Department. A post from the department said the fire was started by a spark from someone who had ignored the burn ban ban.
Firefighters did not give an exact time or location for the fire.
The fire was fought by the Sebastopol Fire Dept., and North Central, with assistance from the Lake Fire Department, Walnut Grove Fire Department, Ludlow Fire Department, Lena Fire Department, multiple Mississippi Forestry Commission units, and aerial firefighting resources.
It was estimated that the effort from the volunteer firefighters save about 30 homes.
“This is why burn bans MUST be taken seriously. They are not suggestions or inconveniences. They are put in place to protect lives, property, and the very people who risk their safety responding to these emergencies,” read admonition from the post.
No arrests were announced.
