It’s gotten so dry in this area that it won’t take much wind to spread any wildfires that break out. The National Weather Service has posted an “elevated” risk of wildfires through Saturday as a result of extremely dry vegetation and low humidity. It says, even though winds should stay below 10 miles an hour today and tomorrow, any sort of sparks could ignite fallen leaves and drought-stressed grass and touch off a big fire. And conditions will only get on worse on Friday as a strong cold front moves in with winds gusting up to 35 miles an hour. Two dozen counties across the state, including Attala, Winston, Carroll and Montgomery, have burn bans in effect.
