Scott Colom says he’s confident he’ll win Mississippi’s U-S Senate race. The latest numbers show Colom leading Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith by about 1,100 votes but the outcome will depend on votes that are still uncounted including a large number of affidavit ballots which county election commissioners will examine to see if they’re valid and some absentee votes that are in the mail. And Colom says he and his staff will be watching closely to see how those ballots are handled.
And while Colom was holding a news conference Wednesday, Hyde-Smith issued a statement saying her campaign is closely monitoring the remaining vote count. She said she believes that when every legally-cast vote is fully and accurately counted, she’ll be re-elected.
Secretary of State Michael Watson says about 3,600 absentee by mail ballots still haven’t been received. As of Monday, that included 45 ballots in Attala County, 51 in Leake County, 38 in Neshoba County and 105 in Holmes County. Watson says counties have until November 13 to certify their election results. And speaking of deadlines, if you cast an affidavit ballot because you didn’t have proper identification at the polls, you have until next Tuesday to bring your ID to your county circuit clerk’s office to verify your ballot so your vote can be counted.
