Friday night’s game between Leake Academy and Wayne Academy was one for the record books, and Rebels senior quarterback Majure Chandler made sure of it.
In a wild 62-58 win over Wayne Academy, Chandler put on a historic performance, completing 25 of 38 passes for an MAIS single-game record 600 yards and five touchdowns.
Chandler’s huge night broke the previous MAIS single-game passing record of 593 yards, which was set by MRA’s Phillip Short.
He didn’t just do it with his arm, either. Chandler also ran the ball eight times for 17 yards and scored a rushing touchdown.
His big night earned him Player of the Week honors from Capital Sports MS, along with Easton Page and Gage Warren.
What makes Chandler’s big season even more impressive is that this is his first year playing quarterback. After moving over from tight end to replace former Leake standout George Wilcox, Chandler has stepped right into the role and kept the Rebels’ offense rolling.
Through 11 games this season, Chandler’s stats show just how effective he’s been:
-
Passing: 137-of-263 for 3,044 yards and 28 touchdowns against 7 interceptions.
-
Rushing: 131 carries for 644 yards and 14 touchdowns.
Chandler and the Rebels will look to keep the offense moving this Friday night when Leake Academy hosts Columbia Academy in the first round of the MAIS playoffs.
