Choctaw County is now eligible for some federal disaster assistance after January’s winter storm. Choctaw, along with Itawamba, Oktibbeha and Wilkinson counties have been added to the disaster declaration which already covered Attala, Holmes, Carroll, Montgomery and 30 other counties plus the Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians. According to FEMA, public assistance grants can be used to help pay for debris removal, emergency protective measures and the restoration of disaster-damaged publicly owned facilities and specific facilities of certain private, non-profit organizations. The public assistance program also helps to cover hazard mitigation measures to prevent future damage to the same facilities.
