The Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians Veterans Association has been trying to solve a mystery. How did a tombstone from a veteran’s grave end up in a pile of debris at a dumpsite?
“This was off of James Billie Road in Choctaw, MS…”
Rick Alex, the tribe’s Member Services Division director, says the tombstone bore the name of Van Regis Tubby who died in 1957. And he says they’ve learned from family members that Tubby may have been buried in old cemetery at a Catholic church about three or four miles from where the tombstone was found…
“How it got to that location, we have no idea…”
Alex says they’re hoping to confirm the location of Tubby’s grave…
“If we do locate where his resting place is, we would definitely like to relocate headstone to that location in honor of his memory…”
Anyone with information about who took the tombstone from the gravesite is asked to call 855-4-THE-REZ.
