CARTHAGE, Miss.–A thirsty Mississippi may see some rain soon. But, it may not be enough to do much to the stout drought the state is experiencing.
“It looks like Thursday through Friday, even Friday evening there will be decent rain chances, or at least the best chances we’ve seen in maybe a month across the area,” said National Weather Service forecaster Mike Edmunston.
That may possibly mean an inch over two day’s time.
But, for an area that has gone for long without any substantial rainfall, it’s still too little.
“Along the Hwy. 82 corridor to the Hwy. 84 corridor, they’re in the D-1 drought zone,” he said. While that’s the least intense on the scale that goes from 1 to 4, it’s still enough to mean we will need several inches over several days to make a real difference and put an end to the drought.
“An inch of rain over two days period may put a little dent in it,” said Edmunston.
But, he said the weather pattern is shifting, with high pressure that’s been dominating the weather in central Mississippi, moving to the east and allowing for the possibility of cold fronts that could bring more rain and cooler temperatures.
