Lavontis Smith has announced he is stepping down as head coach of the Ethel High School football team.

Smith made the announcement Wednesday afternoon via a post on the Ethel Football Facebook page.

“While this is a bittersweet decision, I believe it is time to pursue a new milestone in my life,” said Smith. “Ethel will always hold a special place in my heart, and I am deeply thankful for the memories and relationships that will last a lifetime. Once a tiger, always a tiger. Thank you Ethel!”

A native of Maben, MS, Smith was promoted to head coach at Ethel in June of 2023. During his two seasons as head coach, Smith led the Tigers to two playoffs appearances, which included hosting a 2023 home playoff game for the first time since 1995.

Smith played his high school football at West Oktibbeha. After high school, he continued his career playing as a wide receiver and kick returner at Northeast Mississippi Community College before transferring and playing his final two seasons at North Carolina Central University.

Prior to his senior season at North Caroline Central, he was named to the Preseason All-MEAC Second Team as a return specialist.
