The Arleigh Burke-class guided missile destroyer USS Mason (DDG 87) got underway from Naval Station Mayport on March 24, beginning its scheduled deployment as part of the George H. W. Bush Carrier Strike Group.
After months of training and preparation, the Mason is heading out to support operations across the Atlantic serving as a key force in air and missile defense, ready to deter threats and protect U.S. and allied interests.
With a crew of around 300 Sailors, the Mason is built for it all—air warfare, anti-submarine missions, and surface combat operations. It’s one of the most capable ships in the fleet, and it’s ready. “A truly incredible amount of training and energy went into ensuring our crew is prepared for this deployment,” said Capt. Kevin Hoffman, Mason’s commanding officer. “Thank you to our families and the Mayport community for your continued support as we head out to sea.”
And aboard that ship… is my son, CTR Specialist Mason Rodriguez. He began his Navy journey on the Fourth of July 2024. But long before that, he grew up right here at Boswell Media—his first paying job was inside these walls at Kicks 96.
He’s a Sailor, yes… but he’s also family. Part of the Boswell Media, Kicks 96 family—loved as one of our own. And just like his work family… his dad couldn’t be prouder. God speed to the crew and come home safe son.
