CARTHAGE, Miss.–A high-speed chase Saturday night in Leake and Madison counties began when the driver of a Dodge truck turned around before reaching a safety checkpoint.

Radio communication indicated the chase began about 10:15, with a deputy telling dispatchers that speeds had reached 100 mph on Hwy. 16, with the truck headed west toward the Madison County line.

After reaching Madison County the truck turned onto several small, county roads, with speeds still in excess of 90 mph at some points.

Madison County authorities were notified about the chase, but were unable at first to help because the nearest deputy was coming from Canton, still a good ways away from the chase.

The truck wrecked on Virgin Mary Rd., south of Hwy. 16, at about 10:30.

“Got one female at gunpoint,” said one deputy.

It was unclear if that was the only occupant of the truck. A short time later a deputy could be heard asking another if he was bringing the sheriff’s department drone. Those are sometimes used in locating people who may be hiding.

Shortly before 11 communication about the chase stopped.

It was unclear the if the woman who was being held was arrested.
